- Who Shot J.R.? brings "Dallas" to cult status. (Spoiler: It was Kristin. Seriously. You've had 38 years.)
- John Lennon is shot to death outside his apartment in New York. News of his death was broken live on Monday Night Football, as fans mourned all over the world.
- Evita dominates the Tony Awards. Best Play Children of a Lesser God and 1981 Tony Winners 42nd Street and Amadeus make their Broadway debuts. 42nd Street director/choreographer Gower Champion passes away on the morning of the show's opening performance.
