Paul McCartney turned 70 this past June. His latest album, called "Kisses on the Bottom," is a collection of standards, tunes McCartney first heard and internalized as he was growing up in his musical household in Liverpool, England, and that later informed some of the finest songs he wrote during his days with the Beatles. Some of those standards and a couple of Beatles' items are featured on this week's program. Other sounds are from the Irish band Altan; movie music by Vangelis; and individual tunes from The Hot Club of Cowtown, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and the Tord Gustavsen Trio.
