- The Sandinistas take rule of Nicaragua
- Saddam Hussein takes over power in Iraq
- President Carter and Soviet Premier Brezhnev sign the SALT II Treaty
- Punk Rocker Sid Vicious dies of a drug overdose while on trial for murdering his girlfriend
