This installment of 'Big Barking Dog Alternative Radio' originally aired in June of 2014 under the name "BBD - Black Panther Party." It is one of my favorite and most popular shows earning over 175hrs of plays and downloads. Other acts featured in this show include: Foster the People, Matt & Kim, Little Daylight (Twice as Nice Remix), Parquet Courts, Good Shade, Bob Mould, Claire, Mowglis, Nina Simone, Roxy Music, Bobby Seale, Jimi Hendrix, Medgar Evers and James Brown.

When WCRS returns to the FM radio early in 2017, I'll launch a new program on Sunday morning entitled "Classic Marat," offering the very finest in Alternative Classic, Chorale, Opera and Jazz music. This week please enjoy "Requiem Da Camera" by Gerald Finzi. This hidden masterpiece, begun in 1924 and only finished in 1990, is his lamentation for those brave men and women, of all nations, who fell during the "Great War" (1914-1918). With social conflict all around us (Iraq, Syria, etc), this requiem (musical composition in remembrance of the dead) is as pertinent today as it was then. The opening track is JS Bach's, "The Little Fugue in G Minor."
Check out these brilliant Alternative bands poised to BREAKOUT BIG in 2017: Billie Eilish, Girl Pool, Bonzai, Sorority Noise, Nadia Rose, Fickle Friends and Gaelic Storm.

Also included are "All of the Prophets" featuring Zain Bhikha, Yusuf Islam and the Islamic Children's Choir. This week we offer the soundtrack from the 1938 film entitled "Alexander Nevsky" directed by Sergei Eisenstein and scored by Sergei Prokofiev. This brilliant composition marries soaring choral with a deeply emotive orchestration. The film tells the story of a 13th Century invasion of Russia by the Teutonic Knights and their subsequent defeat by Prince Alexander Nevsky. In actual fact . . . coming immediately before WWII . . . it presages the Nazi Invasion of the Soviet Union and their subsequent rout.

Arguably the best selling world music album of all time, "Buena Vista Social Club" reunites Cuba's most venerable musicians, many of whom were active in the 1930's, 40's and early 50's. Wu revives, escapes to the mountains and joins the "Red Detachment of Women" who return to overthrow the landlord and liberate her village.

French Actress and Singer Charlotte Gainesbourgh has just released one of my favorite albums of 2017. You've seen her films including Jane Eyre, Les Miserables, 21 Grams and Melancholia. Stephen Hawkins warns they may be on their way. This afternoons musicians include : U2, Iggy Pop, M83, Oasis, Lisa Loeb, HelloVenus, Chromatics, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Frank Ocean, the Four Tops, ELO and Foster the People. Yeah. Pretty Damn Cool.
John Legend is Jesus Christ Superstar in this April 2018 version of the classic broadway musical. The live performance on NBC was extremely well executed.

All bands on today's show begin with the letter "B" yet the overall set is very well balanced with performances by B.O.B, Bad Suns, Badly Drawn Boy (two songs), Bananarama, Bang Gang, Belle and Sebastian, Benjamin Clementine and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Beauty can be found everywhere . . . even with Bands whose names begin with "B" . . .

Paul McCartney's 17th solo album was released on September 7, 2018 and debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200. This afternoon we play "Egypt Station" in its entirety. It is an effort filled with quiet poetry and sublime melodies. I also like the cover art which is an original painting by the musician.
They Gayngs are an alternative "super group" collective that includes musicians from Bon Iver, Policia, The Rosebuds, Solid Gold, Doomtree, Megafaun, Marijuana Death Squads and Digitata. This afternoon we play their debut album, released in 2010, entitled "Relayted."
Indila brings wondrous Franco Alt Pop . . . and a great album from 2014 . . . entitled "Mini World." Youssoupha compliments her sound with French Hip Hop and an EP named "We Know Each Other." I guarantee the coolest coffee shops from Montreal to Paris are playing these tracks. How come you ain't listening ?
Russian Emo Angst Electronica Ballads. Kinda like Grimes meets Bjork then Pussy Riot crashes the party. "Underground Fairy Tale" was released by IC3Peak on September 29, 2018. It is a must listen. Unless you are Czar Putin. Then you'll hate 'em.
"Once you felt the pain – you will feel it again.
I don’t cry over you.
Only cold can burn out tears on my face.
I wish I could never see . . .
What’s hidden ahead . . .
My heart is so heavy – I’m falling into abyss . . .
While it’s turning in stone from the inside . . .
I come from a Russian horror fairy tale.
It doesn’t matter where you’re from.
I am not afraid of daylight.
There is enough darkness here.
This world gives you everything you ask for.
But it takes it all away when you least expect."
Exactly what Fyodor Dostoevsky would have written had he played club dates in Russia in 2018 . . .

"Kind of Blue" is generally recognized as one of greatest jazz albums of all time. Quadruple Platinum ? Not sure I can count that high. Listen to this sublime set as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Bill Evans experiment with modal Jazz.
Great alternative bands exist all around the world. The Carsick Cars are from China but their sound would be equally at home on the Lower East Side of Manhatten. They've opened for Sonic Youth in Prague and Vienna and also performed at "South by Southwest" (SXSW) in Austin Texas as well as the Modern Sky Festival in Beijing. "You Can Listen, You Can Talk" is their second album. Songs are in both English and Mandarin. Great stuff. Check it out.

There are many great bands from the 1970's. Unfortunately a lot of their songs are over played. Check out lesser known but sensation tracks from Graham Nash & David Crosby, T Rex, The Rolling Stones, Brian Ferry, Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens, The Clash, The Dead Boys, David Bowie, Dolly Parton, Brian Eno and Blue Oyster Cult.
Velvet Underground Alumni John Cale dazzles with this requiem for the dead of the Falklands War. Alternative Classical with a Dylan Thomas Libretto ? Yeah. Got it here. "Words for the Dying" is de rigueur for the Living.
"Adore" by Smashing Pumpkins is a controversial album. Coming after the success of two highly regarded efforts ("Siamese Dreams" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"), it marked a shift into alternative electronica. The mood is dark as befits a band buffeted by divorce, drug addition and line up changes. It is also one of my very favorite Smashing Pumpkins efforts. With heavy musical textures . . . and a heart breaking libretto . . . it is not to be missed.
This is essentially a rerelease of the first Deep Forest Album supported by the addition of club remixes. It is a wonderfully skillful blend of voices from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Solomon Islands and Burundi . . . married with electronica melodies, chants and lullabies as produced by Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez. The voices of the Efe people are predominately featured. "Deep Forest" is one of my favorite World Music albums from the 1990's.

This is the final (and perhaps the finest) album by the Alternative Band called "The Cranberries." Bursting on to the Alt/Indie scene in 1993 with their debut album entitled "Everyone Is Doing It, Why Can't We?" their haunting track "Linger" continues to be heavily featured on Alt/Indie Rock radio stations across the world. Today I play my favorite tracks from their final Album appropriately titled "In the End" released in April of 2019, following the death of their lead singer Delores O'Riordan.
When I started producing content for radio 5-6 years ago, my first show included a song by First Aid Kit. They are a remarkable Swedish Alternative folk duo that includes sisters Klara Söderberg (on vocals/guitar) and Johanna Söderberg (on vocals, bass, keyboards and autoharp).
I’m long overdue to produce a show that highlights their impressive body of work. Today I present songs from several First Aid Kit albums including: The Lion’s Roar, Stay Gold, Drunken Trees and Ruins.
While the band is Swedish their sound contains elements of pure Americana.
Klara and Johanna have long favored many classic American musicians including: Billie Holiday, Emmy Lou Harris and The Carter Family. The Carter family was the "first family" of American Country music from the 1930’s thru the 1960’s . . . with June Carter Cash (who wrote and performed "Ring of Fire" with her husband Johnny Cash) as one of their most prominent members.

Very few people today know about a remarkably talented and idiosyncratic band called "The Blue Nile." While eschewing the spot light they gained the admiration and support of Peter Gabriel and Rickie Lee Jones. Today we offer tracks from "Hats", an album that earned the highest accolades from Mojo, NME, Pitchfork, Q and many other musical/cultural magazines. If you look for hidden gems to impress your audiophile friends . . . . consider this a lucky day.
One of my very favorite Kpop bands, AOA (Ace of Angels) is back with a brand new EP. It is absolutely the best work they've done since ChoA left in 2017. Alternative World Music . . . . Nothing Better

"Sugarman" Sixto Rodriquez, is one of America's best, "unknown" singer/songwriters. Despite producing two excellent studio albums in the early 1970's, commercial success alluded him. He found a regular job, bought a modest home and spent his life in a working class neighborhood in Detriot. Many years later, much to his surprise, his daughter discovered he had a FANatrical following in South Africa, Australia and several other nations around the world. Like many musicians, he did not receive the financial reward he had earned, however he did embark upon several world tours to connect with his enthusiastic worldwide fanbase. I showcase his music today along with other 1970's Rock greats Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. Also in included is another "greatly overlooked" artist from 1970's, the incomparable Nick Drake. Thanks to WCRS for allowing local Columbus Ohio producers to create unique and high quality radio shows not available on conventional FM Clear Channel Radio.
