1964: The Music & Headlines

58:28 minutes (53.54 MB)

Tonight on the show, music from 1964, which was a groundbreaking year in music with the British Invasion sweeping the music charts by storm. Songs from The Beatles, the Animals, the Supremes, and others are played in this hour.

Later this week on a special The DJBC Happy Hour Express on http://djbcadventures.tumblr.com, Headlines from 1964...

Your Music Obscurities and oddities

119:41 minutes (109.58 MB)

Your Music typically focuses on music the other stations in town won't typically play, not due to quality, but because it's not in keeping with the other stations' formats, or is too political, or not released in the U.S., or it's too old, or the tunes are too long, etc. That leave a huge range of possibilities without sacrificing anything in terms of quality, or artistic merit. This edition features REALLY off-the-beaten track selections of exceptional quality from many countries and at least 5 decades.

1:13 minutes (1.11 MB)

WHERE: the Fellowship Hall at Overbrook Church
4131 N. High (plenty of free parking)
WHEN: Saturday Feb 8, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Valentine Concert:
love songs, candlelight, laughs, and tears

In a hall bathed with the glow from dozens of candles, I’ll strum my
guitar, play the piano, and sing all kinds of love songs. Songs about the
joy and ecstasy of love. And songs about the pain and heartache of love.

Most of the songs will be familiar tunes, songs made famous by a wide variety
of folks like John Denver, Bette Midler, Bob Dylan, Roberta Flack, Dan
Fogelberg, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, the Eagles, Nat King Cole, James Taylor,
and Tom Waits.

Beautiful flute music, played by Ann Fisher, and soothing violin music,
played by Sandy Jones, will add to the romantic atmosphere on many of the
songs.

We’ll also have some fun with trivia questions about famous and infamous
couples….and about love songs themselves.

Plus, we’ll serve up some refreshments, wise sayings about love, and a
couple of fun surprises. You could even win a door prize!

We’re asking for $10 per-person donations at the door for a great cause:
this May’s annual Central Ohio Folk Music Festival.

WHEN: Saturday Feb 8, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Questions? Call me, Bill Cohen, at 263-3851 or
billcohen@columbus.rr.com So, please bring your sweetheart (or just yourself) to our Valentine Concert:

WHERE: the Fellowship Hall at Overbrook Church

PSA Pete Seeger function, Columbus Folk Music Society 2-16-14, 35 E. Oakland Park D.Austin - PSA Pete Seeger Ftn

0:51 minutes (795.85 KB)

Columbus to Remember Pete Seeger with a Giant Sing-along Pete Seeger used music to bring people together to promote peace and social justice. So what better way to remember him than a giant folk music sing-along.
Sunday February 16 from 3 to 5 p.m., the Columbus Folk Music Society will sponsor the hootenanny at the Columbus Mennonite Church, 35 E. Oakland Park in Clintonville.
Bill Cohen on guitar, Carl Yaffey on Banjo, and Jackie LaMuth on bass will lead the crowd in singing songs that Pete wrote or helped to make popular…songs like If I Had a Hammer, We Shall Overcome, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, and Turn Turn Turn. But other songs of the modern folk music revival will also be featured, songs like Puff, This Land is Your Land, and Blowin’ in the Wind.
Please DO NOT bring instruments, but PLEASE DO bring your hands for clapping, your toes for tapping, and your singing voice for harmony.
Admission is free, but we’ll pass the hat to benefit the Folk Music Society.
Young and old alike are invited to raise their voices in song, just the way Pete would have liked it.
For more info, contact Bill at (614) 263-3851 or billcohen@columbus.rr.com

Fast Times in Palestine...Pamela Olson event...

0:53 minutes (834.87 KB)

Fast Times in Palestine:
A Love Affair with a Homeless Homeland
by Pamela J. Olson

“No other book has conveyed such an authentic, penetrating, and enchanting sense of the Palestinian people and their long struggle for rights and security.” — Richard Falk, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories.

Pamela Olson, a small town girl from eastern Oklahoma, had what she always wanted: a physics degree from Stanford University. But instead of feeling excited for what came next, she felt consumed by dread and confusion. This
irresistible memoir chronicles her journey from aimless ex-bartender to Ramallah-based journalist and foreign press coordinator for a Palestinian presidential candidate. With dizzying speed she found herself attending
Yasser Arafat's funeral, tour-guiding Israeli friends around the West Bank, dating a Palestinian from a conservative village, being held at gunpoint and injured by a stun grenade, and witnessing the 2005 Disengagement from inside
the Gaza Strip. The gripping narrative focuses not only on violence, terror, and politics but also on the daily rounds of house parties, concerts, barbecues, weddings, jokes, harvests, and romantic drama that happen in
between. Funny, gorgeous, shocking, and galvanizing, Fast Times in Palestine challenges the way we think not only about the Middle East but about human nature and our place in the world. Named a Top 10 Travel Book of 2013 by
Publishers Weekly and a Best Travel Book of Spring by National Geographic. A question and answer session will follow the book discussion.

The Global Climate Convergence for People, Planet and Peace over Profit is an education and direct action campaign beginning this spring, with “10 days to change course,” running from Earth Day to May Day. It provides coordinated action and collaboration across fronts of struggle and national borders to harness the transformative power we already possess as a thousand separate movements. These grassroots justice movements are sweeping the globe, rising up against the global assault on our shared economy, ecology, peace and democracy. The accelerating climate disaster, which threatens to unravel civilization as soon as 2050, intensifies all of these struggles and creates new urgency for collaboration and unified action.
The Convergence creates a unifying call for a solution as big as the crisis barreling down on us – an emergency Green Economic Transformation through a Global Green New Deal including universal jobs, health care, education, food and housing security, economic and political democracy, demilitarization, an end to deportations, and 100% clean renewable energy by 2030. Clearly the time for action is NOW!

Musical Coffeehouse To Spark 1960’s Memories

Civil rights sit-ins. Bell-bottoms. Anti-war marches. Student Power. Afros. Mini-skirts. Hippies. Riots. Space flights. The generation gap. Those hallmarks of the turbulent 1960’s will be rekindled Friday November 14 at this year’s annual “Spirit of the ‘60’s Coffeehouse”: Friday November 14, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. King Avenue Methodist Church 299 W. King at Neil in Columbus.
Bill Cohen will lead a candlelit, musical, year-by-year journey through the era, with live and familiar 1960’s folksongs, “news reports” of sixties happenings, displays of anti-war buttons and posters, and far-out sixties
fashions. Plus, Bill will also challenge the audience with sixties trivia questions. Proceeds from the suggested $10 donations (at the door) will go to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Refreshments will be available at no extra charge. Free parking is also available in the lots just South and West of the church. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement, but get there early for a good seat.
The program is suitable for ADULTS and MATURE TEENS.
It’s the 28th year of sixties coffeehouses for Bill. He’s performed the show more than a hundred times now at colleges, churches, synagogues, conferences, high schools, and middle schools across Ohio and beyond. For more information, call Bill at (614) 263-3851. Or go to www.spiritofthe1960s.com.
